News from the US Department of Education

On August 1, 2016, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) issued updated guidance and clarification on providing positive behavioral supports to those students with disabilities who need them. The communication emphasized that implementing evidence-based, multi-tiered behavioral frameworks can improve overall school climate, school safety, and academic achievement for all children, including children with disabilities. These multi-tiered behavioral frameworks include development and instruction of clear behavioral expectations for all children, targeted intervention for small groups of students not experiencing success, and individualized supports and services for those needing the most intensive support.
